Monarch Life Cycle CardsMonarch Life Cycle Cards

This is a set of 16 cards is appropriate for older students. It was originally designed to help teachers in my annual monarch teachers’ classes explore eggs, caterpillars (in all 5 instars as well as in J), chrysalides, and eclosing butterflies on their own. These cards were developed over two years after many years of trying to fine tune a way to explain everything through pictures and powerpoint presentations before I handed out live caterpillars and eggs. I am delighted with how well they empower students with no previous exposure to monarchs to do their own hands-on observations and journalling without enduring my lecture first! Teachers wanted sets to take back to their own classes.

The deck begins with photos and explanations of molting so that students can avoid disturbing caterpillars in that delicate, but not so obvious process. They then present:
• caterpillar body parts and head
• egg
• hatching
• each of the five instars,
• creation of the silk button.
• hanging in “J,” through creation
of the chrysalis
• chrysalis
• eclosing (butterfly emerging from a
chrysalis)
• and both male and female butterflies
(the first and last cards)

On the flip side of full color photographs (and one color illustration) are explanations of what is happening, what to look for and line art of
information most easily understood as a picture.

This set was designed for adults. They may be used successfully with students 4th grade and above, though more supervision will be necessary for a successful hands-on experience for younger students. – Ba Rea
